Street artist Reka One (James Reka) is spreading his graphic design style graffiti art from Melbourne, Australia, to Berlin, Germany, conquering walls every step of the way. Some of his art works have been bought by the National Gallery of Australia, an institution that supports street artists from Australia and the international art scene, reflecting Reka One’s encouragement of the city scape as a canvas for artists. On his Facebook page, he claims his personal interests are based on the fact that he likes writing his name on your property – a humorous nod at the reasons why street artists do what they do.

Reka One uses geometric shapes to build his street art murals, creating characters out of simple forms such as circles, ovals, squares and triangles. His street art style is reminiscent of the 20th century art movements cubism and constructivism, in which artists used geometric shapes to construct their paintings. Unlike these early twentieth century artists, however, Reka One has not limited himself to stretched canvas, but instead creates his gloriously large paintings on the sides of buildings, stretching his designs to fit these larger canvases so that they seem almost omnipotent as they stare down at passers-by.

Though Reka One doesn’t limit himself to a single color palette, each of his street art murals has its own set of shades that he has chosen for it. The colors that Reka One uses assist to portray the emotion and personality of the piece. The way that he manipulates colors and shapes means Reka One has accomplished a difficult feat; to tell a complex story in a minimalist manner.
