Latin American street artists, Grupo Acidum, are painting their way across the planet, sharing their ideas and art with anyone who passes by. Their street art murals are the result of genuine talent and artistic expression. Though their paintings have sometimes been labelled as erratic or even outrageous, this collaborative group of artists have stuck to their guns, or rather their brushes and spray cans, to continue creating their unusual art works.

Their influences include Spanish and Brazilian artists who pushed the boundaries of what classified as art in their day. The effect that these rebellious artists had on Grupo Acidum is apparent, if you know what you’re looking for. In the past, artists working together would generally aim to create a single style. Acidum’s paintings, however, combine the styles of individual artists to allow each artist to have a voice in the painting. The result is a collaborative collage of artistic communication. Each piece appears to be a discussion between form, color, styling and expression.

Many corporations have started using art as a means of advertising their products. Flashy billboards and enormous, artistic adverts are becoming more common in cityscapes. In an interview with Dumbwall, one of the Acidum artists stated, “There really is a lot of stuff out there that’s disguised as art, but that’s just the way it is, not only in the world of urban art, but in all areas. There are purely commercial productions trying to pass for something real. We believe that what is made in a spirit of truth will always stand out and prove its essence on its own. Even among the overload of images and information, what is real and what is strong always wins out in the end, it stands out and touches people’s hearts.”

Grupo Acidum have chosen the streets as their gallery in a bid to connect with the world at large. Their art is an expression of opinions and ideas that they wish to share with others without asking anything of their viewers. You can see more work by Grupo Acidum on their blog.
