Mandala-mad artist José Flávio Audi paints the streets with flowers of the human spirit

José Flávio Audi is a Brazilian artist based in Sao Paulo. He works in a variety of art forms, including tattoo art and street art. In this article I’m going to introduce you to his street art murals that are based on geometric mandala designs. Audi doesn’t just feature mandalas and geometric flowers as stand-alone designs, he also incorporates mandalas into maps and animal portraits.

Mandalas are circular designs that are usually drawn from the centre outward. Most mandalas are floral in nature, with petal shapes expanding the design outwards. Because of the impression of a flower blossoming, mandala flowers are sometimes called a “flower of life”. They are used as a symbol of human spirit and personal growth. Mandala designs are sometimes referred to as having sacred geometry, because to view a mandala is to experience a sense of peace and joy; emotions that are sacred to most people. The idea of the mandala is also very old, and therefore sacred. Tribal art from most parts of the world include various takes on the mandala theme.

Audi is not only an artist, he has also studied psychology and worked in a university-run program to promote social inclusion. He says he enjoys making street art murals because street art brings art directly to the public by presenting the paintings in public spaces where people can easily access them. He likes that his art can be seen by all people. José Audi can be reached through his Facebook page.

Colorful, cheerful and spiritual mandala murals by José Flávio Audi:

José Flávio Audi painted this street art mural of a world map filled with mandala flowers to show how interconnected all human beings are. His patterns are very intricate and delicate, which add to the sense of fragility that one finds in in Audi’s art works. The feeling is that the freshness and beauty of the murals are as fleeting as our own lives. [source]
